Powell sits in the Big Horn Basin, one of Wyoming's more unexpected agricultural pockets — a high desert valley carved out by the Shoshone River and irrigated into farmland against all odds. The golf here reflects that same unpretentious, make-it-work spirit. Powell Golf Club is a public course serving a small community of roughly 6,000 people, the kind of place where locals know every bounce and break by heart, and visitors quickly sense they've stumbled into something genuinely unhurried.
Wyoming's golf season is compressed by altitude and climate — winters arrive early and linger — so the months when Powell is open carry real weight in the community calendar. Expect wide skies, occasional wind off the surrounding basin, and mountain views toward the Absarokas that no scorecard will ever capture. The turf conditions and pace of play here are shaped by a town that takes care of its own.
This is everyday golf at its most honest: no resort pretense, no private-club mystique, just 18 holes that belong to the people who live there.
