Few English courses announced themselves quite so ambitiously as The Oxfordshire. Designed by Rees Jones and opened in 1993, it was built to an unapologetically American standard — broad, sculpted fairways, aggressive bunkering, and water in play on many holes — at a time when that approach still felt genuinely novel on this side of the Atlantic. The club attracted serious investment and serious intent from the outset, and the course quickly earned a reputation as one of the more demanding tests in the Home Counties.
The setting is quintessential southern England: rolling farmland between Thame and the Chiltern Hills, with enough elevation change to give the layout real variety and visual drama. Rees Jones, known in the United States for his major-championship venue work, brought that high-stakes sensibility to Oxfordshire's countryside, producing a course that rewards careful course management and punishes the wayward shot with genuine severity.
The Oxfordshire sits in comfortable reach of both Oxford and London, which has always shaped its identity — a club with metropolitan ambitions planted in deeply rural surroundings, and a course that asks more of you than the pastoral scenery might initially suggest.
