Few modern American courses have generated the kind of instant buzz that Gamble Sands did when it opened in 2014. Designed by David McLay Kidd — the Scotsman behind the original Bandon Dunes layout — it was built on the rolling, sandy terrain above the Columbia River in north-central Washington, and immediately drew comparisons to the great links-style courses of the British Isles. Golf Digest and other major outlets ranked it among the best public courses in the country within years of opening, a remarkable achievement for a destination that requires genuine effort to reach.
Brewster sits in the heart of Washington's apple country, a high-desert landscape of brown hills, sage, and river canyons that few golfers would think to associate with world-class golf. That surprise is part of the appeal. Kidd used the natural sandy soil and tumbling terrain to create a walking-friendly layout where the ground game is as important as the aerial one, and where no two stances feel quite the same.
The resort has since added a shorter, wilder companion course called Sagemaker, doubling down on the property's commitment to pure, unpretentious golf. No carts are required, caddies are available, and the overall ethos is firmly rooted in the tradition of just playing the game — no dress-code theatrics, no forced formality.
