Few courses in the Cheshire plain carry the quiet authority of Sandiway Golf Club. Founded in 1921 and designed by Ted Ray — the 1912 US Open champion and one of the great English professionals of his era — the course occupies mature heathland that gives it a character quite distinct from the parkland layouts that dominate this part of northwest England. It was later refined by H.S. Colt, whose fingerprints on the bunkering and strategic routing help explain why Sandiway has long punched above its weight in terms of reputation.
The heathland setting delivers everything you'd hope for: sandy subsoil that drains freely, heather framing the fairways, and tall pines lending definition without claustrophobia. The par-70 configuration isn't a concession to brevity — it reflects a design philosophy that prizes precision and course management over raw distance, with short par-4s that demand thought rather than power.
Northwich sits at the heart of Cheshire's salt-mining country, a modest market town surrounded by the kind of understated English countryside that rarely makes tourist brochures but rewards those who look closely. Sandiway is very much of that spirit.
