Pete Dye designed Pound Ridge Golf Club, which opened in 2009, and it arrived with immediate fanfare — Golf Digest ranked it among the best new courses in the country upon its debut. Dye, already in his 80s at the time, brought his full arsenal to the Westchester County hills: steep drop-offs, forced carries, an undulating putting surfaces, and a routing that squeezes drama out of every elevation change the property offers. The course plays far harder than a casual glance at the card suggests, and the par-3 16th — a spectacular downhill one-shotter often compared to a miniature version of Augusta's 12th in terms of the anxiety it produces — has already earned a reputation as one of the finest short holes in the Northeast.
Pound Ridge itself sits in northern Westchester, a quietly wealthy corner of New York where stone walls cut through hardwood forest and the pace of life slows considerably from the city an hour south. The golf scene here skews private and understated.
This is not a course that flatters the casual visitor. Dye built it to expose every weakness, and the terrain gives him the raw material to do exactly that.
