Few public golf courses in Tennessee carry the pedigree of Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain. Opened in 1999, it is one of 5 courses in the Jack Nicklaus-designed Bear Trace system, a collection built across Tennessee state parks — making it among the most unusual publicly accessible golf experiences in the American South. The Cumberland Mountain layout is widely regarded as the flagship of that series, and it regularly earns placement on best-of lists for public golf in the region.
The course sits within Cumberland Mountain State Park on the Cumberland Plateau, a broad highland that runs through the center of Tennessee at roughly 1,800 feet of elevation. That altitude moderates summer heat considerably compared to the lowland South, and the plateau's dense hardwood forests and rocky terrain define the course's character — tight, wooded corridors, elevation change, and genuine autumn color in October.
Crossville itself has quietly built a reputation as one of the most golf-rich small towns in the United States, with an outsized number of courses for a community of its size. Bear Trace is the crown jewel.
