Golf de Luchon

Few mountain towns in France carry the golf pedigree of Bagnères-de-Luchon. Perched in the Haute-Garonne at the foot of the Pyrenees, this grand old thermal spa resort drew aristocrats and wealthy travelers throughout the 19th century, and its golf course was a natural extension of that Belle Époque leisure culture. Golf de Luchon is one of the older clubs in the Pyrenean region, its origins tied directly to the resort era when English visitors in particular brought their sporting habits south with them.

The course plays across a valley floor and gentle slopes with the high peaks of the Pyrenees forming an almost theatrical backdrop. The mountain setting means the turf tends to be firm and fast in summer, the air noticeably thin and clear, and the light unlike anything on a lowland parkland track. Conditions can shift quickly, as they do anywhere in serious mountain terrain.

Luchon itself remains one of the most atmospheric towns in the French Pyrenees — a stage-town for the Tour de France, a thermal cure destination, and a genuine piece of old France. The golf fits that unhurried, old-world character well.
