Mauston sits in the heart of Juneau County, a part of central Wisconsin defined by the Wisconsin River, glacial lakes, and the sandstone bluffs that give this stretch of the state its rugged, unhurried character. Castle Rock Lake — one of the largest lakes in Wisconsin — lies just outside of town, and the golf course shares its name with that landmark, grounding it firmly in the local landscape.
A par-71 layout in this region typically rewards course management over pure power, and central Wisconsin's mix of sandy soils, native grasses, and rolling terrain can make for conditions that shift noticeably with the seasons. Summers here are warm but rarely brutal, and the surrounding scenery — wooded ridgelines, open sky, the occasional glimpse of water — tends to do a lot of the heavy lifting in making a round feel worthwhile.
For visitors passing through on their way to the Dells or exploring the lake country, Castle Rock offers a straightforward, unpretentious round that reflects the region's easy-going, outdoor-oriented personality.
