Eswatini — the small, landlocked kingdom formerly known as Swaziland — offers one of southern Africa's more surprising golfing encounters, and Nkonyeni sits at the heart of it. The course occupies the Lubombo region in the country's east, a dramatically different landscape from the cool Highveld of the capital Mbabane. Here the terrain opens into warmer, lower-lying bushveld: acacia thornveld, red-clay soils, and the kind of wide-open African sky that makes a round feel genuinely remote from the rest of the world.
Nkonyeni is associated with the Nkonyeni Lodge and Golf Estate, a private development that brought resort-standard golf to this corner of the kingdom. Playing golf in Eswatini carries an inherent novelty — the country's courses are few, and the combination of big wildlife, distinctive indigenous vegetation, and the rolling Lubombo plateau gives the setting a character no manicured parkland elsewhere can replicate.
A par 71 layout suggests some asymmetry in the mix of holes, and in bushveld conditions the challenge tends to be as much mental as physical — accuracy matters where the rough is genuinely wild. For visiting golfers, the experience is less about competitive benchmarks and more about where you are.
