Villa Nueva sits just south of Guatemala City, part of the sprawling metropolitan corridor that climbs and dips through the highlands of the central plateau. At roughly 1,500 meters above sea level, the air is thinner and cooler than visitors expect, and the surrounding landscape — volcanic ridges, dense tropical vegetation, and the particular quality of light that comes with altitude — gives this part of Central America a character quite unlike the beach resorts most outsiders associate with Guatemala.
Mayan Golf Club is a private club serving the capital region's golfing community, one of a small number of full-length courses in a country where the sport remains relatively exclusive. A par-72 layout at this elevation will play shorter in feel than the scorecard suggests — the ball carries noticeably farther in thinner air — which tends to reward aggressive play from players who know the conditions.
Beyond the golf itself, the club draws meaning from the broader cultural landscape of Guatemala, home to one of the richest living Maya heritages in the Americas. Playing here carries a sense of place that few courses anywhere can match.
