Few links courses in Wales command quite the reputation Southerndown does. Perched on clifftop downland above the Bristol Channel near Ogmore-by-Sea, the course occupies one of the most dramatic pieces of golfing terrain in the country — a high, exposed plateau of limestone and gorse where the wind is rarely a bystander. Founded in 1905, Southerndown has long been regarded as one of Wales's finest tests, regularly appearing in national top-course rankings and earning the respect of serious golfers who make the pilgrimage to the Vale of Glamorgan.
The layout plays more as a clifftop heathland than a traditional seaside links, with firm, fast turf and tumbling fairways that demand both creativity and patience. The views across the Channel toward Somerset and Devon are a constant, glorious distraction, and the gorse that flanks so many holes is as penal as it looks.
Bridgend sits at the southwestern edge of the South Wales valleys, close enough to Cardiff to draw a strong regional golfing community. Southerndown sits above that world entirely — a members' club with genuine character and a course that earns its reputation every time the wind gets up.
