Sanibel Island sits a few miles off Florida's southwest Gulf Coast, connected to the mainland by a single causeway, and its identity has long been shaped by a fierce commitment to conservation — over half the island is protected wildlife refuge. Golf here doesn't feel like the manicured resort excess of Naples or Bonita Springs. It feels quieter, more woven into the subtropical landscape, where the rough edges of mangrove and palmetto scrub push right up against the fairways.
The Dunes Golf & Tennis Club is the island's only full 18-hole course, which gives it a certain community gravity that strictly private or destination clubs rarely develop. A par 70 at this length plays as a genuinely interesting test rather than a pushover, and the flat coastal terrain means wind off the Gulf becomes the real architect on any given afternoon.
Sanibel's wildlife — herons, roseate spoonbills, the occasional alligator sunning along a water hazard — makes rounds here feel less like athletic competition and more like a guided immersion into one of Florida's most consciously preserved corners.
