Few private clubs in northern New Jersey carry as much history as Forest Hill Field Club, one of the region's long-established members' retreats with roots stretching back to the early 20th century. The club has long been a fixture in Essex County's tight-knit golf community, a county that punches well above its weight in terms of quality private layouts given how densely developed the surrounding suburban landscape has become.
Bloomfield sits in the heart of that suburban belt between Newark and the Watchung Mountains, and Forest Hill reflects that geography — a course that had to make the most of a finite, mature piece of ground rather than sprawl across open countryside. That constraint tends to produce courses with personality: precise, tactical, and rewarding to players who think their way around rather than simply overpower it.
As a private field club, the atmosphere here leans toward the traditional and member-focused — a place built around regular play, club competition, and the kind of familiarity with a layout that only years of membership can bring.
