Cairns Golf Club has long served as the home course for the tropical north Queensland golfing community, occupying the suburb of Woree on the southern fringe of Cairns. It carries the kind of lived-in familiarity that comes from decades of club competitions, weekend fourballs, and generations of members who've learned every quirk and bounce of the layout. For visitors arriving from interstate or overseas, it offers a genuine local experience rather than a resort-polished one.
Playing golf this far north means contending with conditions unlike almost anywhere else in Australia. The wet season brings heat, humidity, and afternoon storms that can reshape the course in ways no scorecard captures. The dry season — roughly May through October — is when the course shows its best face, with lower humidity and reliable trade winds adding a strategic dimension that separates careful course management from brute force.
Woree sits just inland from the Coral Sea, with the rainforest-clad ranges of the Atherton Tablelands visible to the west, giving rounds here a distinctly dramatic tropical backdrop that most Australian golf courses simply cannot offer.
