Few golf experiences in New England ask quite as much of you before you even reach the 1st tee. Chebeague Island sits in Casco Bay, about 4 miles offshore from the mainland, reachable only by ferry — and that journey is very much part of what this place is. The island is one of the larger inhabited islands in the bay, a quiet community of year-round residents and summer people, with no cars allowed for visitors. You walk or bike from the dock.
Great Chebeague Golf Club is one of Maine's oldest clubs, and the course reflects that heritage — a short, compact layout that winds through the island's interior, where the terrain, the trees, and the occasional glimpse of open water do the heavy lifting. At par 66, this is not a course that demands length; it demands thoughtfulness, local knowledge, and a willingness to let a place work on you.
Bring a sweater regardless of the forecast. Casco Bay has its own ideas about weather, and the ferry doesn't wait.
