Leonardtown sits at the heart of St. Mary's County, where southern Maryland's tobacco country gives way to tidal creeks and the broad reaches of the Potomac River. Breton Bay itself is a long, sheltered inlet that defines much of the town's waterfront, and the golf course takes its name from that body of water — placing it squarely within a landscape shaped by water, farmland, and the quieter rhythms of one of Maryland's oldest settled regions.
As a public course serving a rural county seat, Breton Bay fills the role of the community's everyday golf destination — the kind of layout where local regulars know every bounce and break, and visitors discover a straightforward, unpretentious round in genuinely pleasant surroundings. St. Mary's County isn't a golf tourism hub, which tends to keep the atmosphere relaxed and the tee sheet manageable.
Maryland's western shore climate means a real four-season game: humid summers, colorful autumns, and winters that can shut things down temporarily. Spring and fall are the sweet spots, when the bay-area air is cool and the course plays at its best.
