Streamsong Resort's Black course arrived in 2017 as the third and most dramatic addition to one of American golf's most unlikely destinations — a former phosphate mining operation in the middle of Florida's flat, landlocked interior. Designed by the duo of Gil Hanse and Gavin Kyle MacBain, Black brought a wilder, more rugged personality to a property already defined by the acclaimed Red and Blue courses from Tom Doak and the Coore & Crenshaw partnership. Where those courses lean into the rumpled, linksland-style terrain sculpted by decades of mining activity, Black pushes the drama further, with bold bunkering and a layout that feels almost confrontational compared to its siblings.
Streamsong sits roughly 90 minutes from both Tampa and Orlando, deliberately removed from the resort corridors that define Florida golf for most visitors. That isolation is part of the appeal — the property functions as a genuine escape, and the mining-reshaped landscape bears no resemblance to the manicured flatness most people associate with the state.
Playing all 3 courses over a long weekend has become something of a pilgrimage for serious golfers, and Black holds its own as the newest and most adventurous entry in that conversation.
