Few backdrops in Irish golf carry the weight of Dromoland Castle — the 16th-century fortress that presides over this estate course in County Clare. The castle itself is one of Ireland's grandest luxury hotels, and the golf course is very much part of that world: a manicured parkland layout winding through ancient woodland and along the shores of Lough Dromoland, with the castle's turrets visible from several points on the course. Playing here is as much an experience of the estate as it is a round of golf.
The course was designed by Ron Kirby and J.B. Carr, the latter one of Ireland's most celebrated amateur champions, and later refined to sit comfortably within its storied surroundings. Mature trees line many of the fairways, water comes into play on multiple holes, and the overall character is one of classic, unhurried parkland golf — demanding enough to reward precision, but never overshadowing the scenery.
County Clare sits on the western edge of Ireland, not far from the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher. Dromoland offers a very different face of Irish golf from the famous links of the Wild Atlantic coast, but it earns its place as one of the country's most memorable places to play.
