Few golf courses in California carry the backstory that Yocha Dehe does. The club is owned and operated by the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation, the tribe whose ancestral homeland encompasses the Cache Creek watershed in the coastal range foothills of Yolo County — making this one of the most distinctively owned and situated public golf courses in the state. The Rees Jones redesign, completed in 2007, brought genuine national-caliber architecture to what had been a more modest layout, and the result earned the course immediate attention and strong reviews among California golf travelers.
The setting is the real draw. The Coast Range rises on the horizon, and the surrounding ranchland and walnut orchards give the property an open, unhurried character that the Sacramento Valley's flatlands nearby can't match. Cache Creek's gentle terrain produces elevation changes that feel natural rather than manufactured, and the conditioning reflects the tribe's considerable investment in the property.
Yocha Dehe is a public course worth traveling for — genuinely underrated on the national stage, ambitious in its architecture, and unlike anything else in the Central Valley's golf landscape.
