Cortez sits in the southwestern corner of Colorado, deep in the heart of Mesa Verde country, where the Colorado Plateau stretches toward the Four Corners. This is ancient land — Ancestral Puebloan territory, red rock canyons, and high desert at around 6,000 feet of elevation. The name Conquistador speaks directly to that layered history, the meeting of Indigenous civilization and Spanish exploration that defines this corner of the American Southwest.
At a mile-high desert altitude, the air is thin enough that the ball carries noticeably farther than sea-level golfers expect, and the dry climate means firm, fast conditions through much of the season. The surrounding landscape of mesas, sage, and the distant San Juan Mountains gives the course a dramatic visual backdrop that few regions in the country can match.
For a community of Cortez's size, a full 18-hole, par-72 layout represents the anchor of local golf life — likely the course where everyone in town learned to play, made their pars, and watched the seasons change over the canyon country.
