Few Italian golf destinations sit in a setting quite like this one. Poppi is a medieval hilltop town in the Casentino valley, a largely undiscovered fold of eastern Tuscany where the Arno river has its headwaters, the forests run thick with chestnut and fir, and the Apennine ridgeline forms a constant backdrop. The Casentino has historically drawn pilgrims to the monastery of La Verna and hikers to the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi — golfers remain very much a minority here, which is part of the appeal.
A course in this terrain will almost certainly demand elevation change, tree-framed corridors, and a feel far removed from the manicured resort golf of the Tuscan coast or the Chianti wine country. The valley's climate is cooler and wetter than central Tuscany, meaning the turf tends to play firmer and faster in summer but genuinely green through much of the season.
For a visitor, the surrounding area is as compelling as the round itself. Poppi's castle, the Castello dei Conti Guidi, dominates the skyline, and the valley's quiet agriturismo culture means post-round meals taken seriously. This is golf absorbed into a landscape with its own centuries-old identity — the course borrows from it rather than imposing on it.
