Merbein sits on the Victorian side of the Murray River, in the heart of the Sunraysia region where the river red gums grow thick along the water's edge and the surrounding landscape opens into the flat, sun-baked stretches of irrigated farmland that define this corner of northwest Victoria. It's a long way from the metropolitan golf belt, and that's precisely its appeal — a genuine country club serving a tight-knit community of growers, tradies, and locals who've been teeing it up out here for generations.
The course plays through classic inland conditions: firm fairways, sparse rough, and the kind of dry heat in summer that can strip 20 metres off a well-struck iron. The Murray mallee and river gum vegetation give the layout a distinctive character, and the light out here — golden, expansive, unobstructed — makes an afternoon round feel unlike anything in the city.
For visitors passing through Sunraysia, perhaps combining a round with a stop at one of the region's many wineries or citrus farms, Merbein offers an honest, unpretentious game of golf in genuinely beautiful country.
