Few public golf facilities in the Madison area carry the history and scale of Yahara Hills, where the East course has served the city's golfers for decades as part of a 36-hole municipal complex on the eastern edge of town. Operated by the City of Madison, the facility represents exactly what good public golf infrastructure looks like — a place where residents at every level of the game have reliable, affordable access to a full-length layout without the barriers of a private club.
Madison itself is a genuinely interesting place to play golf. The city sits in the heart of the Driftless-adjacent lake country of south-central Wisconsin, and the surrounding landscape of rolling glacial terrain, wetlands, and the chain of Yahara River lakes gives the region a distinct character. The course name itself nods to that river, situating the golf firmly within its local geography.
The East course plays as a traditional par 72, offering enough length to challenge players who want to test their game while remaining accessible to the everyday recreational golfer that municipal courses exist to serve.
