Kickingbird Golf Club has been a fixture of the Edmond golf scene since the early 1970s, operated as a municipal facility that has served generations of Oklahoma City-area players. The course takes its name from Kickingbird, a 19th-century Kiowa chief whose people roamed the southern plains — a reminder that this part of central Oklahoma carries a deep and layered history beneath its suburban present. Over the decades it has earned a reputation as one of the more respected public-access layouts in the metro area, the kind of course where serious players grew up learning the game and still return to on weekday afternoons.
The terrain reflects the rolling cross-timbers landscape typical of central Oklahoma — a transitional zone where the open plains give way to scrubby post oak and blackjack oak woodland. That mix of elevation change and tree-lined corridors gives the routing more character than a flat parkland design would suggest.
At par 70, Kickingbird plays shorter than a traditional championship layout, but the routing rewards accuracy and course management over raw power — a setup that suits the everyday municipal golfer while keeping single-digit handicaps honest.
