Few clubs in the Bay Area carry as much history as the California Golf Club of San Francisco. Founded in 1918 and designed by the legendary Willie Watson, the club has roots in the early wave of California golf, when the game was spreading rapidly through the Bay Area's fog-draped peninsula. The course has been refined over the decades but retains a classic parkland character — tree-lined fairways, precise approach angles, and greens that reward thoughtful positioning over raw power.
South San Francisco sits in the corridor between the city and the peninsula, where marine influence keeps conditions cool and wind is rarely absent. Morning fog is common, softening the turf and muting distances in ways that demand local knowledge. The club has a well-earned reputation as a serious members' track — not a resort showcase, but a course built for people who genuinely love to play golf and play it often.
Cal Club, as members call it, is a private institution with a deep competitive tradition. It has produced accomplished amateur golfers and hosted significant California golf events over its long history, representing exactly the kind of understated, character-rich club that defines Northern California golf at its best.
