Few resort destinations have arrived with as much immediate fanfare as Streamsong. Opened in 2012 on former phosphate mining land in central Florida's Polk County, the property defied every assumption about what Florida golf looks like — no palm-tree-lined fairways, no water hazard on every hole, no manicured suburban sameness. The mining operations left behind a corrugated, almost lunar landscape of towering sand ridges and deep blowout bunkers that architects Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw (Red) and Tom Doak (Blue) seized upon with obvious delight. Both courses immediately drew comparisons to the great linksland courses of the British Isles, and both landed in nearly every serious top-100 list within a year of opening.
The Red and Blue play across the same terrain but with distinct personalities — Coore & Crenshaw leaning into sweeping, strategic width while Doak's routing tends toward more intimate, ground-hugging drama. Playing both in a single stay is essentially the point of a Streamsong visit.
The nearest city of any size is Tampa, roughly 90 minutes north, which means Streamsong operates as a genuine retreat. A third course, the Black, designed by Gil Hanse, joined the property in 2017, making the destination even more difficult to leave in a hurry.
