Trail sits in the steep, mineral-rich Columbia River valley of southeastern British Columbia, a working industrial town shaped by the massive Teck smelter that has dominated its skyline for over a century. Golf here exists in genuine contrast to that industrial identity — the surrounding terrain is rugged and dramatic, with the Columbia carving through canyon walls and the Monashee and Selkirk ranges rising on all sides. Summers are warm and dry by BC interior standards, producing firm, fast conditions that reward local knowledge.
Birchbank Golf Course is the kind of members-only club that anchors a smaller community's golf culture — a place where the same groups play Saturday morning rotations for decades and the handicap board tells the story of the membership better than any brochure could. Private clubs in towns like Trail tend to develop a close, unhurried character that resort courses rarely replicate.
The Columbia River valley's topography almost certainly gives Birchbank significant elevation movement, and the river corridor itself would bring mature tree cover and the kind of natural framing that makes a golf course feel genuinely rooted in its landscape.
