z'Makanà

Macugnaga is one of the most dramatically situated villages in the Italian Alps — a Walser settlement at the foot of Monte Rosa's immense east face, where the mountain's glaciated walls rise nearly 3,000 meters above the valley floor in a single, almost vertical sweep. Getting here means winding up the Val Anzasca past chestnut forests and stone hamlets, and the sense of arrival is genuine. This is not a golf resort that happens to be near mountains; the mountains are the entire context.

z'Makanà sits in this setting as one of the highest-altitude courses in the Alps, and playing it means negotiating terrain that simply doesn't flatten out. The layout works with the natural slope of the valley rather than against it, and the course earns its reputation more through scenery and character than through length or conventional difficulty. The Monte Rosa massif is a constant presence over your shoulder.

The name itself is Walser dialect — a nod to the Germanic-speaking community that has inhabited this valley since the 13th century and still gives Macugnaga much of its cultural distinctiveness. The short summer season and the mountain microclimate keep conditions in a narrow window, which makes a round here feel genuinely seasonal and worth planning around.
