Few public-access courses in the Coachella Valley have earned the kind of national attention Desert Dunes has. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 1989, it was built to evoke the linksland traditions of Scotland — a rare ambition in a desert setting — with wide, rumpled fairways, deep fescue rough, and greens that reward ground-game thinking as much as aerial precision. Golf Digest once ranked it among the top public courses in California, a distinction that still draws traveling golfers who want something different from the manicured resort layouts that dominate nearby Palm Springs.
Desert Hot Springs sits at the northern edge of the valley, away from the glitz of Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage, and the course reflects that less-polished character. The Santa Rosa Mountains frame the western horizon, and the wind — a constant presence out here — turns what looks straightforward on the card into a genuine test of shot-making.
The routing makes clever use of the natural desert terrain, with sandy scrub and native vegetation defining the edges of play. This is not a target-golf course demanding carries over manufactured hazards; it asks instead for creativity, patience, and a willingness to let the ball run.
