Few resort courses on the Mornington Peninsula carry the drama that Cape Schanck delivers. Designed by Peter Thomson, Michael Wolveridge, and Ross Perrett and opened in 1997, the course sits at the southern tip of the Peninsula where the land pitches and rolls toward Bass Strait, and the design makes full use of that rugged coastal terrain. Wind is not an occasional nuisance here — it is a permanent co-designer, capable of turning a comfortable round into something far more demanding. The par-70 layout rewards precision and local knowledge over raw distance.
The RACV resort that surrounds it draws visitors from Melbourne, roughly 90 kilometres to the north, who come for the Peninsula's food and wine culture as much as the golf. Cape Schanck itself is a wild, exposed headland, home to a 19th-century lighthouse and coastal heathland that gives the property a character distinct from the more manicured resort courses closer to Portsea and Sorrento.
Thomson, a five-time Open Championship winner, brought a links-influenced sensibility to the design — ground game, natural contours, and holes that ask you to think about trajectory and ball flight rather than simply clearing hazards. It remains one of the more thoughtful resort layouts in Victoria.
