Few courses in the northeastern United States carry the architectural pedigree that Somerset Hills does. The course was designed by A.W. Tillinghast — the same mind behind Winged Foot, Baltusrol, and Bethpage Black — and laid out in the early 20th century across the rolling terrain of New Jersey's Somerset Hills. Tillinghast's work here displays his characteristic boldness: naturalistic bunkering, demanding green complexes, and routing that rewards players who think their way around rather than simply overpower it. The course plays to a par of 71, and that deceptively modest figure belies just how much strategic trouble Tillinghast wove into the design.
