Gallup sits at roughly 6,500 feet on the Colorado Plateau, where the high desert air is thin, the sky runs wide, and the landscape is defined by red sandstone formations, juniper scrub, and the kind of rugged western terrain that makes everything feel a little bigger than it does at sea level. Golf here is a different physical experience — the altitude adds real distance to every club, and the dry, firm conditions produce a game unlike anything you'd find in the mountain resorts to the north or the desert resort corridors to the south.
Fox Run is a public course serving a community better known as a crossroads city on old Route 66, gateway to Navajo Nation country and one of New Mexico's more distinctly working-class golf towns. An 18-hole layout at par 71 suggests at least one par-4 has been converted or the routing plays with some asymmetry — worth asking the pro shop about before you build your game plan.
Expect the honest pleasures of high-desert municipal golf: wide-open views, value green fees, and a round that moves at its own unhurried pace. Gallup doesn't draw destination golfers, which means the tee sheet stays manageable and the atmosphere stays local.
