Mbabane sits in the Highveld highlands of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), a small landlocked kingdom wrapped in the Mdimba Mountains and the broader Drakensberg escarpment. The elevation here — the capital perches above 1,000 metres — means the air is thinner and cooler than the surrounding lowveld, the landscape dramatically hilly, and golf balls fly noticeably farther than they would at sea level. It is an unusual setting for the sport, and all the more memorable for it.
Usutu takes its name from the Usutu River, one of Eswatini's most significant waterways, and the course reflects the rugged, forested character of the region. Golf in this part of southern Africa carries a particular pioneer spirit — small national associations, courses shaped as much by the land's own logic as by architectural ambition, and a clubhouse culture that tends to be genuinely welcoming to visitors passing through.
At par 73 across 18 holes, the layout almost certainly leans into the terrain rather than fighting it, rewarding course management over raw power. For travelling golfers, Usutu represents something increasingly rare: a round that feels rooted in a specific place, far from the tournament-circuit mainstream.
