Shelley Point Golf Club

Shelley Point Golf Club occupies one of the more dramatic stretches of coastline along the Western Cape's west coast, where the Atlantic Ocean wraps around a rocky peninsula at St Helena Bay. This is the bay where Vasco da Gama anchored in 1497 on his voyage to India — one of the oldest recorded European landfalls in southern Africa — and the area retains a quiet, unhurried character that sets it apart from the busier resort strips further south toward Cape Town.

The course is built within the Shelley Point residential estate, a private coastal development roughly 140 kilometres north of Cape Town, and it plays through fynbos-covered terrain with the ocean a near-constant presence. The combination of Atlantic sea breezes, exposed lies, and firm fairways gives the course a links-adjacent feel, even if the design doesn't strictly qualify — the wind is very much a feature here, and club selection rarely straightforward.

St Helena Bay is a working fishing town at heart, lending the area an authenticity that more manicured resort destinations lack. Shelley Point itself feels like a genuine local secret — a course where the setting does as much work as the routing.
