Few resort courses in the American South can claim quite the setting that Primland commands. Perched high in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwestern Virginia, the course sits atop the Dan River Gorge with elevation changes that would be dramatic even without a golf club in your hand. Meadows of Dan is genuinely remote — a plateau community near the Virginia–North Carolina border where the air is cooler, the skies are darker, and the landscape feels older and wilder than the surrounding foothills below.
The resort itself is built around a working estate of roughly 12,000 acres, and the golf course reflects that sense of space and seclusion. Playing here feels less like visiting a conventional resort and more like being given rare access to a private mountain world. The routing takes full advantage of the ridgeline topography, delivering long views across the gorge and forested ridges that stretch well into the distance on clear days.
Primland positions itself as a high-end wilderness retreat — fly fishing, hunting, and stargazing alongside the golf — which shapes the overall feel of a round here. This is destination golf where the landscape is the attraction, and the course earns its place within it.
