Desert Center sits at one of the loneliest crossroads in California — a small desert community along Interstate 10, roughly midway between Palm Springs and the Arizona border, where the Mojave and Sonoran deserts converge and temperatures routinely push past 110 degrees in summer. Golf out here isn't a luxury amenity; it's a genuine curiosity, and Lake Tamarisk is the reason it exists at all. The course serves a small residential community of the same name, one of those mid-20th-century desert developments that believed the good life could be planted in the hardpan.
Playing here means accepting the Sonoran landscape on its own terms — sparse, sun-baked, and dramatic in its austerity. The par-70 layout is a compact design, not a championship test, but that's beside the point. The point is the stillness, the heat shimmer off the fairways, and the improbable fact that green grass is growing at all out here.
For travelers cutting across the desert on I-10, Lake Tamarisk is one of those stops that rewards the curious — a genuine local course with almost no equivalent in American golf geography.
