Few clubs in Australia carry the weight of history that Metropolitan does. Founded in 1891, it ranks among the oldest golf clubs in the country and has long been regarded as one of Melbourne's — and indeed Australia's — most distinguished private members' clubs. The course sits within the celebrated Melbourne Sandbelt, that remarkable stretch of sandy, free-draining soil southeast of the city that has produced a concentration of great golf courses found almost nowhere else on earth. Alister MacKenzie consulted on the layout in the 1920s, and his influence is woven into the strategic bunkering and ground-game contours that reward thoughtful play over raw power.
Metropolitan has hosted the Australian Open on multiple occasions, cementing its place in the national game's firmest traditions. The course plays firm and fast in the way only Sandbelt turf allows, with approach angles and green complexes that demand precision and imagination in equal measure.
For visiting golfers, Metropolitan represents access to one of the great private courses on the continent — serious, beautiful, and steeped in more than a century of Australian golf.
