Poppy Ridge opened in 1996 as a dedicated home for the Northern California Golf Association, which operates it as a member-service facility — a relatively uncommon setup that gives the course a purposeful identity beyond simple public access. Rees Jones designed the layout across the rolling hills east of the Bay Area, and the NCGA has hosted countless tournaments and qualifying events here over the years, making it a genuinely competitive proving ground rather than just a recreational round.
Livermore sits at the eastern edge of Alameda County, where the Coast Range opens into a broad valley floor better known for its wine country than its fairways. The terrain here is open and exposed, with the kind of persistent afternoon wind that funnels through the Altamont Pass and turns a straightforward iron into a serious decision. Poppy Ridge actually comprises 27 holes — three 9-hole loops — allowing the NCGA to rotate configurations and keep conditions fresh for repeat players.
The landscape is quintessential Northern California inland: golden hills in summer, vivid green after the winter rains, and wide skies that make the course feel expansive. It plays firm and fast when the dry season takes hold, rewarding precise ball-strikers who respect the wind.
