Bluffton sits just inland from Hilton Head Island, and for years Old South Golf Links has served as a more understated alternative to the resort-polished courses crowding the nearby island. Opened in 1991 and designed by Clyde Johnston, the course works through a Low Country landscape that does most of the aesthetic heavy lifting — tidal marshes, maritime forest, and the kind of Spanish moss-draped scenery that makes you realize why people fall for this corner of South Carolina in the first place.
Johnston's design makes genuine use of the terrain rather than simply decorating it. Marsh carries are a recurring feature, demanding real commitment off the tee and into greens, while the routing's quieter stretches offer a pace and atmosphere that contrast sharply with the busier resort operations across the bridge on Hilton Head.
Old South plays as a public course, and that accessibility has earned it a loyal following among both locals and visitors who want something more grounded than a full resort experience. The Low Country setting remains the constant draw — the golf and the landscape genuinely reinforce each other here.
