Mission sits on the Rosebud Reservation in south-central South Dakota, a wide-open stretch of mixed-grass prairie where the horizon seems to go on indefinitely and the wind is less a weather event than a permanent playing condition. This is ranch country, Lakota country — remote, unhurried, and genuinely far from the golf mainstream. Courses this deep in the Great Plains interior occupy a world entirely their own.
Prairie Hills Square Golf Course serves a community that doesn't have a lot of options nearby, which tends to give a local track real meaning. A full 18-hole, par-72 layout in a setting like this is a legitimate asset — the kind of place where regulars know every bounce and every quirk of greens that live and die by the same wind that shapes the landscape around them. Expect firm, sun-baked conditions for much of the season and almost certainly some inventive routing across terrain that doesn't naturally lend itself to manicured fairways.
If you're passing through this corner of South Dakota — perhaps on the way to or from the Badlands or the Pine Ridge area — a round here is less about the design pedigree and more about the experience of playing golf where very few visitors ever think to look.
