Few golf clubs in western Pennsylvania carry the prestige and history of Fox Chapel Golf Club. Founded in 1923 and designed by Seth Raynor — one of the most influential architects of early American golf — the club sits in the affluent Fox Chapel borough northeast of downtown Pittsburgh, where the terrain rolls through wooded ravines and the Allegheny River valley shapes the surrounding landscape. Raynor's fingerprints are unmistakable: expect bold, geometric green complexes inspired by the great courses of the British Isles, with features like Redan, Short, and Eden holes transplanted onto Pittsburgh's distinctly hilly topography.
The club has long been considered among the finest private clubs in Pennsylvania, and Raynor's work here is regarded by golf historians as one of his better surviving designs in the region. Playing to a par of 70, the course rewards precision and thoughtful course management far more than raw power.
Pittsburgh itself has a quietly serious golf culture, and Fox Chapel sits near the top of that hierarchy — a member experience defined by tradition, a demanding layout, and one of the more architecturally significant pieces of ground in the state.
