Few layouts in the New York metropolitan region make as strong a case for the rugged beauty of northwest New Jersey as Ballyowen. Designed by Roger Rulewich and opened in 1998 as part of the Crystal Springs Resort complex, it was built across the glacially carved highlands of Sussex County — rolling terrain that practically demanded an Irish links-inspired approach. True to that vision, Ballyowen features expansive fescue fairways, dramatic elevation changes, and a wide-open, windswept feel that sets it apart from the tree-lined parkland courses that dominate the region. It has consistently ranked among the top public-access courses in New Jersey and draws strong regional respect.
Crystal Springs is a legitimate golf destination, and Ballyowen is typically considered the flagship of its several courses. The property sits within the Kittatinny Mountain foothills, and on a clear day the views stretching across the Highlands are genuinely striking — part of what makes the experience feel far removed from suburban New Jersey despite the proximity to New York City.
The course rewards shot-making and strategic thinking over raw power. Wind is a regular factor, fescue rough punishes errant drives, and the greens demand respect. Visitors who walk it — and walking is well worth doing — get the fullest sense of the land's natural contour and the design's ambition.
