Big Sugar Golf Club takes its name from the Big Sugar Creek that winds through the Ozark highlands of northwest Arkansas — and the course leans hard into that identity, routing holes along and across the creek in a way that makes water a recurring, consequential presence rather than mere scenery. Designed by Jeff Shelley and opened in 2020, it quickly earned attention as one of the more ambitious public golf projects to emerge in the region in years, drawing comparisons to Ozark-area courses that punch well above their weight.
The terrain does most of the heavy lifting. Northwest Arkansas is genuine hill country, and Big Sugar plays across ground that rises, drops, and bends in ways that demand imagination off the tee and honest ball-striking into greens that are rarely flat approaches. The layout rewards players who can work the ball and think strategically about where misses go.
Pea Ridge itself is a small town best known for a pivotal Civil War battlefield nearby, but the golf course has given it a second claim to regional attention. For Arkansas golfers and visiting road-trippers working through the Ozarks, Big Sugar has become a legitimate must-play destination.
