Ave Maria is one of Florida's more unusual communities — a planned Catholic university town built from scratch in the early 2000s in the rural eastern reaches of Collier County, roughly 30 miles east of Naples. The surrounding landscape is quintessential Southwest Florida: flat, wide-open, and framed by the kind of sky that makes afternoon thunderstorms look like theater. Panther Run is the golf anchor of this master-planned community, and the name itself nods to the Florida panther, one of North America's most endangered large cats and a symbol of the wild lands that still press close against this part of Collier County. That connection to the natural setting gives the course a regional identity that generic resort layouts rarely achieve.
