Few cities in northern Spain position you quite so dramatically over the sea as Santander, and Mataleñas makes full use of that geography. The course occupies the headland east of the city centre, within the Mataleñas natural park, where Atlantic winds come in off the Bay of Biscay without apology and coastal pines frame views that have nothing to do with scorecards. It is a compact, public layout — short by championship measure — but the terrain and the exposure give it a character that longer courses sometimes lack entirely.
The design follows the natural contours of the headland rather than fighting them, which means elevation changes, tight angles, and a premium on ball-striking over raw distance. For visiting golfers it offers an accessible, affordable way into the Cantabrian golf scene, and for locals it serves as a genuine everyday course with genuine everyday wind.
Santander itself rewards any golf trip: a handsome port city with serious food culture, beaches within walking distance of the course, and the broader green landscape of Cantabria stretching inland toward the Picos de Europa.
