Storm Lake sits in the heart of Buena Vista County in northwest Iowa, a region defined by glacially carved lakes, rolling agricultural terrain, and the particular openness that makes prairie golf feel like the land itself is part of the game. The course takes its name from the partnership between the local country club and Buena Vista University, the small liberal arts college that has called Storm Lake home since 1891 — a relationship that gives this layout a dual identity, serving both a tight-knit membership community and the rhythms of collegiate athletics.
Northwest Iowa golf tends to reward ball-strikers who can manage wind. Out on the plains, a calm day is the exception, and clubs can shift by 2 or 3 selections depending on what's moving across the lake. That exposure is not a flaw — it's the honest character of the land.
Storm Lake itself provides a genuine sense of place, a town where the lake dominates civic life and outdoor recreation is woven into the community's identity. A round here is regional golf in the truest sense: unpretentious, honest, and shaped entirely by where it sits.
